"Guiding the Darkness" " Small Garden"

A warm evening after being on the river all day was refreshed and bathed in moonlight. The fullness and completeness in the geometry of the moon are simple. A big white circle that hardly anyone cares to spend time gazing at, yet is always there, being silent. During this time, I have realized once again how small I am in the overall role in society and nature. The moon, however, goes on overlooking everyone, not judging nor complicating life.  I gazed at this sight peering over the top of my neighbors' house, thinking that no matter how dark the world seems around me, there is still light guiding our paths.

Light streaked down on a warm Sunday afternoon across the tiny back yard of my suburban home. I sat stretched back in the long lounge chair, the cold metal stinging pieces of my skin below my shorts. Spring is finally here! I peered over the goldfish pond; moss, irises, and snowbells danced and swayed in the gentle breeze. I zoomed in on the moss. A small garden appeared in the frame. Delicate stems sprouted upward; irises extending their systems into the base of the bank. Pine needles from the Evergreen plastered the sides of the limestone collected from the lake. A Picasso of its own form. A small Hairy Woodpecker tapped on the sap leaving from the bark of the Jack Pine. I placed the brim of my ball cap on my face and snoozed in the small garden of my home, enjoying the peace.

  1. I’m amazed at the clarity of the moon in this shot! What I want to know is HOW? How did you do it so well? That’s something new. Space photography! Maybe that’s something someone should explore later in this class. It would defiantly be difficult!

And great job getting the clear picture of the bird on the tree. I caught a blue jay last week in the woods but it was too far away for me to get a clear photo.

    1. For all of these shots I used my SP 150-600 mm Lens. I was sitting in my drive way with my tripod angled up towards the moon.

  2. I really enjoy the fact that you add writings with your post as it allows us to know what is going through your mind while taking these. The colors in all of these photos are very vibrant and I feel like that goes very well when you are shooing outdoors. Also, the photo of the moon was really well done!

My practice drastically changed once going into quarantine. I found it very difficult to have any motivation once being home all the time. This is especially because I was mainly photographing people. I was no longer able to photograph people in the same way, and ended up mainly photographing my brother in different metroparks in the Toledo area. This proved to be a challenge  as I could no longer shoot on film either, and my dslr stopped working a week into quarantine. This led to most of my photos being phone pics. With these limitations I tried to play off of weird projects I already had been doing. My photos for mom series are literal phone pictures I have always taken for my mom of my brother and I doing weird things in parks. This also drew off of my idea to make eye-spy type pictures of my brother and I hiding in the trees. The last of my film photos are also stuck as edited TIFFs. I was unable to download photoshop as my laptop has no storage, and the files were too big for...

Over the course of quarantine my style of photography hasn't really changed all that much. Taking photos is always something I have done by myself. It is something that I can be alone with my thoughts and enjoy an activity. This allows me to still social distance while taking photos. I usually walk alone when I take photographs so I felt right at home. I think it actually helped me take photos because of the lack of people around I felt like I have more opportunity to go to places that are normally full of people and can be difficult to take photographs in.
roommates mariah and I worked on portraits which is not something in my comfort zone
